The movie shows a simulation of evolving supercell thunderstorm. It presents the potential temperature perturbation along with clouds and rain.
The dry convections associated with air density, wind, temperature are modeled using the compressible Naiver-Stokes equations. Then, the convection model incorporates a moist microphysics model that involves water vapor, clouds and rain to simulate the wet dynamics of the atmosphere. We employ 4th-order basis functions for spatial discretization and a semi-implicit method for time integration.
We are developing a Multiscale Modeling Framework (MMF), which aims to resolve the large-scale process on a global grid and also explicitly capture the small-scale processes through local high-resolution grids.
